The Hidden Impact of School Social Workers

School social workers are often the quiet force that helps a school function when life outside the classroom threatens a student’s ability to learn. They sit at the intersection of student wellness, family support, and community resources, translating needs into action so teachers can keep teaching and students can keep showing up.
Their reach is substantial. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates 352,160 people were employed as child, family, and school social workers nationwide (May 2023), underscoring that this is a major workforce with specialized expertise.
What does that expertise get used for in schools? Attendance is a persistent national challenge in the U.S., and barriers are often practical, not motivational. A 2025 peer reviewed article notes that 14 to 30 percent of K–12 students are chronically absent each year, commonly defined as missing at least 10 percent of school days. A clear solution points to school-based casework focused on material needs that can reduce barriers that interfere with attendance.
For educators, school social workers are partners who can help navigate crises, coordinate supports, and connect families to services that schools cannot provide alone. For non-educators, the simplest way to understand the role is this: they are the professionals helping schools respond to real life so students can access learning.
Recognition matters because this work is both emotionally demanding and mission critical. When school social workers are consistently acknowledged, it signals that student support is not an add-on. It is part of the school’s core operating system.
Every year, the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) promotes “National School Social Work Week”, held the first full calendar week of March. SSWAA has created free, ready-to-use resources to help school social workers, administrators, and partners recognize and celebrate School Social Work Week.
